UT-Martin will be using a new helmet logo in 2008, according to a report that I have received; the new logo will be the letters "UTM" in blue.

Historical Helmets

AUSTIN PEAY

c.1982 ? - 1999? 2000? - 2005
2006 2007 -

I have never received much historical information for this team, and the "AP" logo, in the various versions shown on the helmets above, is the only which I am aware of the team having used.

EASTERN ILLINOIS

1990 - 1992 1993 1994
1995 - 1999 2000 - present

The photograph below shows a helmet design used by Eastern Illinois during at least the 1972 season; the shell appears to be white, but the colors of the "E" and the dark stripe cannot be determined, of course, from this photograph. Information about other historical helmets would be appreciated.

EASTERN KENTUCKY

1955 - 1961 1962 1963
1964 1965 - 1967 1968
1969 - 1970 1971 - 1976 1977 - 1978
1979 1980 - 2005 2006 -

Eastern Kentucky's team nickname was changed from "Maroons" to "Colonels" in 1963.

JACKSONVILLE STATE

1985 - 1996;
October 26, 2002
1997 - 1999 2000 - 2001
2002 (first 7 games) 2002 (last 3 games) 2003 -

I have received a report indicating that Jacksonville State used red helmets with white uniform numerals on both sides from at least 1967 through 1976. The 1984 helmet design has been described as having a "pearl white" shell and white facemask, a red 1" stripe, and a logo consisting of a red "Old English 'J'". I would greatly appreciate photographs of these or other historical JSU helmets.

The team used three different helmet designs in 2002. JSU began the season wearing white numerals on their helmets; these were used for the team's first seven games. On October 26, the old oval-shaped logo was brought back for a single home game against Stephen F. Austin; this was done in recognition of the 10th anniversary of JSU's 1992 Division II National Championship season. The team used plain red helmets for its last three games in 2002 and then adopted a new design in 2003.

I have not yet received any information about earlier helmet designs from the 1960s and 1970s for this team.

MURRAY STATE

c.1980s c.early 1990s 1997 - 1999
2000 - 2005 2006 -

I have not yet received any information about other historical helmet designs used by Murray State; any information would be appreciated. There are probably many other historical designs.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE

? - 2002 2003 2004
2005 -

Before Southeast Missouri State began using the "? - 2002" helmet logo, the team used a logo consisting of the letters "SE" in red, inside a white circle, with "feathers" hanging off the circle (as in the Washington Redskins logo). I would appreciate a copy of this old logo, as well as any information about earlier designs used by SEMO.

The team nickname was changed from "Indians" to "RedHawks" prior to the 2005 season.

TENNESSEE STATE

? - present

The one earlier Tennessee State helmet design for which I have any information featured a logo similar to the currently-used one, except that the letters were red with white and blue outlines; this logo was worn on white helmet shells with blue facemasks. I do not know if there were any stripes on this design. Information about any other historical designs would be appreciated.

TENNESSEE TECH

c.1950s - mid 1960s c.1965 1968? - 1976
1977 - 1982 1983 - 1985 1986
1987 - 1988 1989 - 1992 1993
1994 - 1996 1997 - 2005 2006
2007 -

UT-MARTIN

c.1980s 1987 - 1988 ? - 1999?
2000? - 2002 2003 - 2004 2005
*see note 1 below
2006 2007 2008 -

At some point during the late 1990s, UT-Martin used white helmets with a decal of the team name "Skyhawks" on the sides; I would appreciate a clear photograph of one of these helmets. The team name was changed from "Pacers" to "Skyhawks" in 1995.

*1 The numerals on this helmet design were worn only on the left sides of the helmets during at least the 2004 season.
